Academic Requirements

A fully integrated education grounded in spiritual truth

Every student who attends Southern Catholic College completes a core curriculum of courses designed to fulfill our promise to provide a well-rounded faith-based liberal arts education. This curriculum, including over half the credit hours required to attain a Bachelor of Arts degree, stresses critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as the development of intellectual ability, leadership skills and moral character. The core curriculum consists of 56 credit hours, plus any hours beyond 6 needed to meet the foreign language requirements.

The following requirements make up the core curriculum:

English Core Requirements:(12 credit hours)
ENG 110: Composition
ENG 111: Masterworks of Ancient Literature
ENG 211: Masterworks of Medieval and Renaissance Literature
ENG 212: Masterworks of Modern Literature

Fine Art Core Requirement: (3 credit hours)
ART 101: Introduction to Art History
MUS 101: History of Music

Foreign Language Core Requirement:(typically 6 to 12 credit hours)
Competency in a foreign language through intermediate level is required of all students.  Depending on the background of each student, this requirement may be met by taking up to four courses in the language.  However, transfer credits for courses leading to equivalent competency in other languages are also acceptable for satisfying this requirement. Students who demonstrate intermediate competency on a placement examination will have met the foreign language requirement. 

History and Political Science Core Requirements:(12 credit hours)
HIS 101: Historical Studies: Origins of the Modern World to 1600
HIS 102: Historical Studies: Origins of the Modern World Since 1600
HIS 201/POL 201: American Civilization: Political and Historical Foundations
HIS 202/POL 202: Principles and History of Political Theory

Leadership Core Requirement: (1 credit hour)
LED 401: Leadership Studies

Mathematics Core Requirement: (3 credit hours)
One of the following Mathematics courses, chosen based on major requirements and placement test results:

MAT 105: Introduction to Mathematical Modeling
MAT 111: College Algebra
MAT 112: Pre-calculus
MAT 115: Probability and Statistics
MAT 120: Calculus I

Philosophy Core Requirement: (9 credit hours)
PHI 101: Understanding the Human Person
PHI 201: Ethics
PHI 202: Philosophy of God and Creature

Science Core Requirement:(7 credit hours)
SCI 110: Fundamentals of Scientific Investigation
One additional 4 hour laboratory science course.


Theology Core Requirement:
(9 credit hours)
THE 101: Introduction to Catholicism and Sacred Theology
THE 201: Introduction to Sacred Scripture
THE 301: History of the Catholic Church and Thought

Total credit hours required are 56 hours plus any hours beyond 6 necessary to meet the Foreign Language requirement.

Course descriptions for these classes may be found in the appropriate section of the College Catalog. Transfer credits may count towards the College core requirements.
